Concrete Photo Frame

6th Semester

(Design Workshop)

Two weeks design workshop on how to use concrete as a raw material. Aarya Precast India Pvt Ltd came to show about the versatility of concrete and the various ways of making beautiful products. We were introduced to the mould making process and the different mixes, colours that we can achieve for a particular product and its use.

Second week of the course, we were asked to make our own products with the moulds. I came up with the idea of a photo frame to break the beliefs of people that concrete products are heavy and fragile. In the process of making i have used ply wood moulds to get the shape of the photo frame and incorporated a wooden band around the concrete by using nails to hold. The wooden ban acts as a support, when the acrylic glass, photo and the back board is placed we can put a stopper or nails on the wooden ban to hold everything together.

The lightness in weight is achieved by using Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) thus the strength of it. The use of glass Fiber and the binder (portland cement) with very less aggregate results in the light weight. After curing for 12 hours the product is removed then sanded in water to get an even surface.
